Hello,

I'm a computer scientist from France. I have been watching Ryzom and NEL since a long time from quite far, but the involvement it would have taken to change NEL alone into a complete MMORPG was too big.

In the mean time I spent quite a big amount of time customizing an emulator for some other MMORPG server, with some useless fun change / balance change / performance changes, like some random example :
- adding a chat translation system that change any insult or 1337 words into role-play phrases
- rewriting most of the fighting calculation formula
- rewriting a big part of the AI (to change the way the mob surround the players when they attack, using skills in a more efficient way...) and added some "mob chat" on some simple event (death, kill, attack, social aggro...)
- changing the way the visibility checks and Z coordinate are computed serverside, based on the map data...

Being based on an original game with an emulated server make things very to have something working quickly but has it's own annoying limits :
- although some could argue that there was no obvious intellectual property infringement, it's at least unethical if not illegal in some other ways
- it requires a lot of maintenance to keep in sync with the original emulator code because of the unprofessional way of branching, commits that mix cleanup and real changes, ridiculous number of cleanup commits...
- the original game is built on an extremely boring "kill thousands of brainless mobs to levelup" gameplay, the editor just update with heap of stuff to be more powerful without changing the rotted gameplay core, and it's hard to change that because no matter how dumb it is, it's part of the player's expectations.
- obviously no flexibility for any client side change that we refrained to even try for legal reasons.

Now that Ryzom is opensource, it looks like an extremely attractive alternative (usable legaly, professionally coded and looks complete enough to make something out of it without an unreasonable amount of initial effort). I also have a friend who might be interested in researching how MMORPG could be used in some educational ways. I'm not sure of my involvement yet but if I get involved I hope I can help out.

I am an avid Ruby on Rails software developer with experience in multiple languages and frameworks, a long-running PC gamer, and somewhat new D20 gamer from Austin, Texas. Unfortunately I had never heard of Ryzom until the recent announcement was made. I'm not a huge fan of MMORPGs due to their lack of epic RPG story-lines (no, a quest line is not the same). I've also never really been able to commit my time to mod development due to the lack of flexibility and documentation of most game engines and toolkits. Ryzom open sourced creates a compelling opportunity to build something without boundaries, not at the mercy of the whims of a company's interest to maintain services, and gives incredible insight in to algorithms and techniques typically kept as trade secrets within well-oiled machines that are becoming less and less likely to innovate in order to preserve revenue from the lowest common denominators; thereby creating a stagnant PC gaming market. I'm really enjoying participating in the community mind-share and hope to provide at least a modest contribution to others.

One of my immediate goals will be to at least assist in modifying the Nel World Editor to support real-time editing of server-side primitives and hopefully more long term have real-time editing of mapping data with a good client update distribution. If this interests you as well, feel free to contact me here or in IRC.

Hi,

I'm a french computer science student, maybe some of you knows me as "the guy with a damned long shell command in his signature on the official Ryzom forum". I discovered Ryzom in January 2007 and quickly got addict to this MMORPG. When I moved to Ubuntu in the same year, kervala helped me to get Ryzom run using wine (thanx a lot :D), then I was able to switch to Debian by myself (still using wine). Now that The sourced are opened, I wish to compile & play Ryzom without wine. Unfortunately, I know ansi C, not C++, but I plan to learn it to help the community if I could (I'm already familiar to Object Programing with others languages, so it shouldn't be too hard to learn it).

Be warned, I like trolling. By the way, object-oriented programming is an exceptionally bad idea which could only have originated in California, C++ sucks ! (yes, I'm also a Dijkstra's fan)

Hi I'm a game developer from Southern California. I primarily do 2D casual games, but I have been looking for a good 3D solution for some 3D games lately. I plan to give ryzome source a try. I've never actually played Ryzom.

Hi All.

I'm an "old" dude, (first PC in ´85) who have been against Microsnot for many years.
I value Novell much higher. :)

Novell turned to Linux, (SUSE), and "my" company turned to Microsoft. :(

So I have to fiddle with linux in my spare time.

Other than that I play Entropia and AfterWorld
So when I discovered ryzom, I thought, why not try start my own MMO-world.

So here I am, not the greatest linux-shark, but getting some kind of hang of it.

Hi, currently i'm working for a flash portal that specialises on multiplayer flash games. Im responsible for our client side Multiplayer Api, that involves a lot of social features (also facebook sighs).

When i'm not "playing" with Actionscript, ill try to train my coding skills in some real languages (i started 20 years ago with basic, moved on to c++, java and some delphi).

Im interested in mmo development since the first mmos started, and with ryzom going open source i want to get some understanding of the basics.

RE: Present yourself - please say "Hi" - Added by jackmeng over 8 years ago

Hi, everyone, this is Jack. I'm here as am both a coder (tough not a game developer) and an MMO player. I didn't play this game before but I'll do it soon. It will be a great expierence to find out how it works with a insight into the code.

Hi everyone !

To present myself in a few words, I'm an opensource enthusiast, I was one of the guys promising donations when the free software foundation was
trying to buy Ryzom in 2006. I work daily with (Open)Solaris, and I'm familiar with Unix environments and shell scripts (I'm not a guru but I'm pretty
sure I could bring my bricks to the edifice). I used to code in C++ in the past, and I miss that! I would enjoy to get rid of that rust I accumulated
around my coding skills with the years.

Nevertheless, as for many people involved I guess, I don't have an infinite spare time. But I will do my best to get some quality work done!

My little dream with the Ryzom engine is to have my personal virtual world to share with my friends :)

Otherwise I'm a French guy, and I've been living in Ireland for a few years now.

Cheers !

i found out that ryzom has gone open source may 7. i think it is very exciting for the game itself and for the prospect of other things.

i have been in computer graphics since 1982 and in vworlds since 1991. in 2007 i thought second life was going to be the leader for vworld development. then i found opensim (a sl emulator) and it is good for certain thing and not so good for some things. then two years ago i had a stroke so i didnt do much last year. but now i am better and look forward to the future.

this that i would like to see includes;

- large regions (this is good in ryzom)
- ai for npcs and mob
- meshes
- streaming graphics
- max, maya, blender graphics. blender for sure.

this week i am doing some testing. two of my machines work (nvidia) and two dont work (non-nvidia card). i plan on a server on ubuntu 10.4 and the clients and tools on windows 7 and xp. sfter that, i will go to my favorite forum such as aidev, muds mail list, and some other places and get their inputs. even the emulators, such as opensim/realXtend, eqemu, and mangos.

i will have more to say about this depending on how i do in building and executing the client/server and tools.

Hi all,

I'm an old school tabletop RPG player/GM/designer, current all-around Programmer/Admin.
My C++ skills are those of an embedded C programmer, but I think I can stick to the coding standards OK.

My first goal is to get a Linux-complete build tree. The client is amazingly close already as near as I can tell, so I hope it won't take too much patching apart from bringing the Lua support up to date (my distribution only comes with luabind 0.9, This could be a "challenge").

As far as Ryzom itself? Trying it out right now, it's a nice sandbox RPG and I am a bit disappointed that I didn't run into it sooner.

RE: Present yourself - please say "Hi" - Added by Kalaith over 8 years ago

Well im just interested in building an mmo..and ryzom seems something to build on,

Ive gotten the server/client complied and talking to eachother..so now going thru the code to see what I can do..

Im not experienced with c++ but I can at least read the code and make sense of it.

I would also like to learn how to use a proper repository system, they always seem like more pain then they are worth.

RE: Present yourself - please say "Hi" - Added by Enoril over 8 years ago

Hi here !

I'm also French and I discovered Ryzom in April 2004 when ryzom was just released.

I mostly like Ryzom for its unique gameplay, background, design, communities, and roleplay possibilities with the community :)
For these reasons, some weeks later, i postulated to become CSR.
During years (with some breaks), I worked in the French team as a CSR (Guide, Senior Guide, Event Game Master and Senior Game Master on ATS).

Despite all many problems that game has met (bankruptcy, etc...), Ryzom has always had a special place in my heart... (my first MMORPG played online!)

With this open code, I hope to make the "in-game roleplay mission editor" that i dream for so long (like i've done in WoW)
...but before that happened, it's time to test all of this

RE: Present yourself - please say "Hi" - Added by fubasa about 8 years ago

Hey everyone,

Unlike many of you I do not have prior Ryzom experience and stumbled across this project a few days ago. I was quite intreged by the fact that game developed so far past production was released as an open-source project that I started snooping around.

I am looking forward on learning more and contributing where I can.

A little more about myself, I am the IT Manager of a large corporate companies' South African devision. I have been working in the industry for albeit close to 10 years, having my share from managing large projects, getting hands on with the development (not C/C++, but with languages such as VB.NET, C#, PHP and Javascript) to the point of doing the grunt work :) of setting up the hardware.

Greetings, all.

Like many of you I wear many hats, and see in this release a potential for something good.I've been working both on my own MMO and own MMO engine for... quite some time. My interests have been on
- procedural content generation,
- MI, (specifically knowledge representation, emotion simulation, and emergent behavior)
- dynamic quest generation and world unlocks.

(just to start).
I don't know if this core will make things easier for me- but it would be nice. :)

Take care.

Hi.

First thanks to Nevrax, Ryzom, NeL and all people around those projects.
I'm a 28 years old game programmer initially specialized on 3D rendering engine & image/sound processing (3 years of study). Plus 2 years about studying embedded systems programming.
I've a 3 years professional experience in game programming from game play to core engine & various tools.

Commercial game products I've used are Gamebryo, Scaleform, FMOD products. Some of the languages I use at present are : Lua, C++, actionscript 2 (and may 3 someday).

I'm pleased to be a member of this community and I really liked to compile Ryzom client and being able to connect on the open shard.

Thanks again

Greetings,

First, just to say than i'm very happy about all's happening here and then thanks to Nevrax and all people working on those projects around Ryzom, and thanks for the coming of it in GNU.

What about me? I'm a beginner in Linux/Server & Client development, but i still try to do good job here and get very interrested and motivated in all that stuff.
I'm also 27 years old & french, my name's Julien, and my real job is web developer, often in php & action script. Old big player, i loved Ryzom before and want to try to help by my own to improve it.

Hope we'll work well together, regards.

Greetings,

I remember playing Ryzom in beta a while back. I didn't stick around, to may other things going on. I spent way to much time in UO and learning C# just for fun. I've picked up on a few Linux things here and there over the years, but never sat down with a project to focus my skills. So, I would like to use project to improve my knowledge.

Hello everybody. When I first heard the announcement about Ryzom going free, I came to this website, where I discovered Mercurial. I immediately started using Mercurial for the Battle for Wesnoth add-ons that I've written. I've never played an MMO before, and I'd like to see what Ryzom is like. My OS is Ubuntu, and I hope to someday use Ryzom to convince my gamer friends to switch to Linux. :)

Hello, and thanks for introducing me to Mercurial.

RE: Present yourself - please say "Hi" - Added by Langerz about 8 years ago

Hi Everyone, ^-^

I've been programming on and off for 8 years or so in a variety of languages.

I was a client programmer for an OS MMORPG The Mana World for a few months, and co-managed a successful MMORPG Private Server that lasted nearly a year or so. I was initially working on a 2D Retro-RPG using Torque Game Builder but stumbled across this while checking out Free MMORPG Engines and want to work on it more.

I am very interested to learn more about everything and look forward to working with you all and hopefully making a few contributions (once I familiarise myself with everything).

All the best!!

Kind regards,
-Langerz.

Hi

I am not an old ryzom player. I have subscribed when I have known it was going open source.
I am not a core developer, as I don't like to make big programs, but I like to patch/bugfix others code :)

I am working in a big webhosting company, and I am specialized in big cluster administration.

I wish the best for Ryzom from the open source community.

RE: Present yourself - please say "Hi" - Added by Nerocon about 8 years ago

Hello everyone,

I am Nerocon aka Brian.. I am not a long time Ryzom player, I actually barely played. I discovered the game years ago midst the shutdown and revival, I found the history of Ryzom very interesting and applaud the player base and devs for stepping up and achieving such a lofty goal. I am a huge fan of the open source movement, and have been interested in game design since I can remember. I have fiddled with most of the game creation packages and have always felt they were lacking. My favorite so far has been World Forge because it is so powerful and also open source. I have nothing real to show off, but hope in the future to have a decent demo of a small fantasy mmo I have been working on for some time now. I plan on moving entirely over to the Ryzom Core and can't wait to see where this community takes this fantastic software.

Cheers!

Hi,
casual player of ryzom, i tried the "free for a time" version, and now i applaud the free initiative of such a big project !
I'm a french system and network administrator and gnu/linux is my way ;)
Actually playing a lot with ubuntu, i try to make the server part work in a virtual machine virtualbox-ose under lubuntu ... not so easy a lot of compilation/libraries problem to solve.
Here my suggestion if you want to vote for it before the automation/packaging part is done => http://feedback.ryzom.com/forums/2600-english/suggestions/821073-virtualbox-ose-images-ready-to-use-for-ryzom-x86-l?ref=title

Hi, I am a game developer / technical consultant / C++ coder (and a few others) trying out Ryzom Core. I have worked with other engines in the past and played MMORPG's since 1999. Not many these days as they take up a lot of time =\

Ive always had a few ideas on what Id want in an MMORPG so I decided to give RC a try.
