Season one mektoub races! Win great prizes!

From the end of July through October, you are invited to participate in the first season of mektoub races. A new race session will be add each week in one of the four countries of Atys. An NPC can be found near each starting point and will supply explanations on the race and rewards that you might win.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers of each race:
- 1st place: 3 points + assortment of goodies
- 2nd place: 2 points + assortment of goodies
- 3rd place: 1 point + assortment of goodies
For the Legendary race, the "Race of the Dragon", points will be doubled.

Finally, a reward will be given to the three top racers who have collected the most points throughtout the race season:
- 1st place: 3 months subscription to Ryzom and some goodies sent by mail.
- 2nd place: 2 months subscription to Ryzom.
- 3rd place: 1 month subscription to Ryzom.
How does a race work?

To participate in a race you must ride your mektoub and be sure that you have enough haybales to complete the race. The start, each waypoint, and finish line are represented by flags similar to outpost banners.

You can start the race at your leisure from the time the race is activated to the end of the session, which lasts approximately one week.

To start a race, you must right-click on the Start flag, and choose "Start". The race and your chronometer will begin from this interaction.

After you have started your run, you will have to interact with and validate each waypoint by right-clicking on the flag and choosing the waypoint indication. All waypoints must be passed in proper order and you will receive a message indicating the registration of the waypoint.

If you get the message "You have missed a waypoint somewhere; retrace your steps.", it means that you have missed validating a waypoint and you will need to validate the missed waypoint to continue the race. For example, if you attempt to validate Waypoint 3 without validating Waypoint 2, you must retrace your steps!

The run will end when you validate the Finish flag by right- clicking on it and choosing "Finish". Your time and your ranking will then appear on the board.

You can start the race as many time as you wish, only your best time will be kept.

The final ranking of winners of each session will be posted here.

This sounded like a great event, but as usual my hopes are dashed.

My original good time of 10:17 has now been overwritten by a time of 6hrs 55:42... I've not even been logged on that [bunnywabbit kissing] long!

Please mind your language, thanks.

Your time was not overwritten; it was a bug in the display only, caused by a rare combination of factors. The bug and your time have now been corrected and should continue to show correctly.

Thank you for your patience.

Rare, right, so rare the 3rd person to take part on our server managed to cause it. Never mind the other bugs we've managed to find in the opening hours of use. (such as not being able to start the race when you _are_ mounted, or starting the race when you _aren't_.

Please forgive me if I get frustrated at the pee-poor quality of 'content' that gets ejected in our direction...

I hope people realise how silly the idea of a race through the desert is given the other event that's currently going on there. :D

The Desert is falling into anarchy, the empire falling apart, people dieing of thirst, tribes and frahar rampaging unchecked.... so let's have a race!
An epic danger race where it's an extra challenge to make sure your mount has enough water to go on and doesn't die of heatstroke!
Where you have to dodge the rampaging tribes, while making long noses at them that your mektoub is getting more water than them!

Race through the epic scenery and see with your own eyes the battlegrounds! The fields of corpses! The dried up wastelands! Scenes that will go down in the history books!

This will surely buoy the spirit of the Fyros people and restore their pride in their overrun homeland and the government who seems to have abandoned the sinking ship to relax in the lakelands.
It's a proven method for keeping your people quiet in times of turmoil and distracted from how their government is not doing anything: Bread and games! Screw water, who needs that?

And you can feel totally good about it, because 10% of all proceeds of the race will go to buying water for the thirsty tribes!
(The other 90% will go towards buying passage for that water through Matis lands.)

(Note, I'm not criticising, I can point out how silly something is without thinking it's bad. :))

The Brotherhood of the Fortunate Gubani is the organisation responsible for those races. They are in no way related to any of the Governments, thus, the one who had that idea is probably based in a land where there is no drought to worry about. And since he isn't the one that is racing, he probably doesn't care about angry tribes making steaks out of our toubs. For him, it's just extra challenge...

Hello,

With the three races in the Witherings being finished, we bring some modifications to the race rules. These changes concern the speed eggs and the mektoubs.

- It is now impossible to race and use a speed modification (egg or acceleration skill). Using an acceleration will cause you to immediately abandon the race.

- Death of your mektoub, freeing it, or being away from it will cause you to immediately abandon the race.

These modifications have been established after feedback concerning the races.

Consolation prizes will be given to every player who makes a better time than the maximum time announced on the race.

Enjoy Ryzom and may the best runner of Atys win!

Glad to read this. After my first race i stopped because looking the times was obvious people used speed eggs.
I didn't complained because i would have used them if i had some, anyway good to see i can try to compete for the next races. :)

Why dont you give us real content by fixing dante instead of mek races.
Mybe you should tell the community Dante is turned off and has been so for over 2 months.

As someone who isn't much into Marauder boss hunting, I've gotten more real content out of these races than I would've gotten out of Dante, thankyouverymuch.

Yes, he should be turned back on, but it's not a dichotomy.

Indeed. Apart from new regions, with new dangers at higher levels for new skills (just another 250 region won't keep people occupied for long...), regular events are the best new content you can have.
Make them varried though, so there's something for everyone at some point.

And make them such that they don't appeal only to high level players while hampering low level players (the race in theory at least works great for that, anyone with the dappers to buy a mount can take part).

It's the people complaining about the lack of content more than any others who complain whenever something is introduced or organised...
If you're so specific in what you want to see, submit a REALISTIC plan to the event team and/or devs rather than discouraging them by slagging their efforts at every turn.

Apparently sitting down also causes you to abandon the race... I assume because it changes your speed factor? :p

I hope that doesn't mean that getting critted in the legs (causing a slowdown) by a random gingo also means you abandon the race, that'd be rather annoying.

This is no longer the case; only speed boosts will now auto-abandon the race (along with losing your mek or porting.)

Should have some directional indicator on the track so you know where to go from the start :)
And sometimes it can be hard to spot there's a waypoint because the track between say wp2 and wp4 is so straight it's easy to miss that there's a wp3 halfway along it.

That's been that way for ages though, not specific to this race sequence.

ok
1. Start. If you want to save few seconds - you start not at start flag, but in 150m range of sight of that flag (closer to waypoint №1 ofc)
2. In the way. When you approaching to waypoint №n (range 150-120m) you begin pixelhunting this waypoint (sometimes it's (flag) became invisible, you can depend only on your memory), right-clicking it, waiting for menu string (lag/ping issue?), checking it, waiting for confirmation (lag/ping issue?)
3. Finish. Same situation as at 2nd paragraph. It's better to hit finish as soon as you saw flag (range 150-120m) to save few seconds too, so it's same case as Start.

We have one word in our language that describes the occupation of such a process, but I will not spell it here.

Re: Season one mektoub races! Win great prizes!

I noticed just before the last race was removed that the rules had been changed so that you now have to be within 15 meters of a flag to activate it. (You can still select the flag from up to 120 meter, but cannot 'check' it unless you're within 15 meter.)

That should take care of most of the worries of unfair advantages for people using targeting macros or unfair disadvantages for people whose flags load slowly for the next races. :)

Just hope in line of this rule that they won't be placing flags inside the Goo anymore. :p

Sywindt August 16th, 2010 10:39 PM

Re: Season one mektoub races! Win great prizes!

Work was already in progress on the distance from waypoint issue and has now been completed, as dianiru already discovered: As of now, the maximum distance to use a waypoint is 15 m.

Also your latest time is now shown in parentheses after your best time in the standings; thank your for the suggestion, r1vver.

The NPC at the start gives you the direction you must start in, but I agree that and the 'hidden' waypoint issue you describe are things to be improved upon.

Re: Season one mektoub races! Win great prizes!

yea the race map needs vast improvement. The racing gets better with each interation though so good job for that. :) though now I can't do a very good drive-by checkpoint check, which was kinda fun. maybe extend the area to 30m? so we don't have to stop but still need to be close?

I totally disagree on this.

It is absolutely obvious that you have to make a full exploration, using the NPC map, before starting the race.

It's not very difficult to imagine to follow the full path and flag all the waypoints on main map. In this way you have just to click your landmark to have the compass direction.

It encourages a full exploration of the land before doing the race. In my humble opinion, this is a good idea.

Last thing, not related to the quote, but mentioned somewhere:

I don't think it's possible to make a targeting macro, because the waypoints have no names, but, anyway, if it's possible to do, then it's just more thinking.... every player have macro system at disposal, so there is nothing "unfair" in this system since everyone could use it.

Only the speed option was a bit unfair, making people without eggs, unable to compete. All the other stuff was just something available to everyone that wanted to use a bit of brain, so they deserve to win the races, eventually.

Just my opinion.

Edit: removed the different opinion of speeding up stanza and eggs, because I was wrong, not considering speeding up comes in different levels. Removing fully any speed option was correct.

Well it seems that gingos have a taste for race flags.:D

Someone may want to look at waypoint 4 of the current race before it is completely eaten.

dianiru September 6th, 2010 12:23 AM

Re: Season one mektoub races! Win great prizes!

You needn't worry, the waypoints are quite capable of defending themselves.

Observe a gingo trying to eat a waypoint for a while, and you'll see the waypoint beat the gingo into submission. :p

Alts are paying accounts too...
According to the rules, they're individual players, as long as they're not bots (in which case another set of rules, banning botting, comes into effect).

Where alts have been removed from the ranking, it's at the request of their main.

True and I specifically asked that my alts not be included as to keep it fair and fun for others. I just run Naup for fun and practice, no need for him to get any prizes. That being said, it seems to have already been corrected.

Doesn't matter. The race mechanics are bugged. When you use the Found portal to try and reach the waypoint there the race abandons because you supposedly used a teleporter.

I've filed a ticket on that yesterday.

map btw is large enough as all waypoints are defined by nicely sharp corners (and the track is a good representation, no waypoints well out of place like in the previous race) :)

I can confirm that 6 people finished the final race, more than enough to have a first, second and third place.

I was fourth so I know there was never any prize given for finishing it. First, second, and third prizes I wouldn't know, but seeing Stitch there was first, I assume his post means he never got any prize for it either.
