VCD 2.0 Toolkits and Audio |
The Macintosh and PC VCD 2.0 Toolkits handle audio differently:
- The Macintosh version converts native audio (AIFF, SDII, WAV) to MPEG audio unless the audio is
added to the Tracks window. Native audio added as a track is automatically made CD-DA (Red) audio.
- The PC converts all native audio to Red tracks. MPEG audio must be encoded and multiplexed before being imported into the PC Toolkit.
The Mac and PC versions of the Toolkit also handle Menu audio (and video) differently:
- The Macintosh version offers only one asset field in its Menu Editor. To play:
- Both audio and video:
Either:
- use a multiplexed AV stream or
- create an Event with the desired audio and video, and drop the Event on the Menu asset field. The audio and video will be multiplexed together at build time. Contrary to the manual, either still or motion
video can be used.
- Just Video:
use a native still, an MPEG still, an elementary video
stream, or a multiplexed video-only stream.
- Just Audio:
use native audio, an elementary audio stream, or a
multiplexed audio-only stream.
- The PC version offers both a video and audio field in its Menu Editor. This leaves open a number of possible combinations of audio and video files, most of which should be avoided:
- Both audio and video:
- For motion video plus audio, use a multiplexed AV
stream. Leave the audio field blank.
- For still video plus audio, there are a couple choices:
- Multiplexed still video with audio stream, or
- Native still (which will be converted to an MPEG still) in the Video field,
plus a multiplexed MPEG audio file in the Audio field.
Note:
- Using native audio should be avoided, because it will be converted
to a Red track: the VCD player will then need to play the MPEG still
and the Red track audio for the menu, with unpredictable results.
- Do not use both a still in the video field and an A+V multiplexed stream in
the audio field. This will result in the still displaying for a fraction of
a second, followed by the audio and video in the multiplexed AV file.
- Just Video:
use a native still, an multiplexed MPEG still, or a
multiplexed video-only stream.
- Just Audio:
use native audio or a multiplexed audio-only stream.
Be aware that native audio will be made into a Red track.
