Game Rules

Added by loreweaver over 8 years ago

This is absolutely fantastic news!

I created a Ryzom account and have played a bit. I'm exceedingly impressed.

I'm downloading the code now and am going to try to get it to compile.

I have one question, though. I understand that the story and level content was not open sourced (understandably).

What about the game rules, concerning Hit Points, spells, weapons, etc.? Are those open as well?

From what I've seen so far in the Open Client sample rules are in there for experience, hit points, weapons, harvesting, spells, etc. but not all of the rules that are in Ryzom. It looks like everything you'd need to figure out how it works and setup your own are included.

If developer who did Ryzom core could anwer question if rules are included in sources it would be great.

Without rules there is no game but maybe intention was not to open source of Ryzom as a game but just engine and graphics assets (which is great by itself).

I specifically ask if all skills&stanzas for every of 4 categories on 250 levels, experience table, battle math are included in source OR game developer must design it all from scratch based on a few example skills?

I would really appreciate if this question could be answered so everybody knows if we should invent the game rules by ourselves.

The point wasn't to open source Ryzom, it was to open source the engine/art/tools so that the community can build upon it. All the Ryzom-specific stuff (quests, items, maps, mobs, AI scripts, etc) are NOT included in the open source project. The framework is there though so you can build what you want.

The "rules" for things like combat and whatnot are part of the game logic, so that's "included" but you'll have to create your own weapons, skills, magic, etc. Plus if you want to have a different game system than what is used in Ryzom you'll need to make code adjustments.

Thanks for letting us know. It's great that the core rules are in there, even if the specific spells, skills, and weapons aren't.

Eventually, I'll be replacing the Ryzom game rules with my own, but I think that's a ways off. There are higher priority issues to deal with first. I still don't even have a clean compile of the whole system yet.
