Proposal: Ring scenarios for user-created worlds

Added by LathaSerevi over 8 years ago

I anticipate seeing a lot of mostly-empty open source Ryzom worlds soon, and have a proposal for how to build them out.

Rather than each server creator trying to create the whole world using something like http://dev.ryzom.com/wiki/ryzom/WorldEditor , it would make a lot of sense to provide the ability for USERS to create sub-regions of the world, using tools that requires no privileged access to the server machine. It's very important to unleash the creativity of people other than ourselves!

We have such a user-created-scenario tool, mostly, in the Ryzom Ring scenario editor. My proposal is to tweak the way that such scenarios are integrated into a world -- rather than the Ring terminal and a list of scenarios that remain active only as long as someone is "in" the scenario ... I envision an extensible world having a lobby area with a couple of dozen PORTALS arranged in a circle, and a means for a user to attach a Ring-style scenario to a portal.

This would require a little coding to make the integration of Ring style scenarios smoother -- particularly, their temporary nature, access via the Ring terminal, and the inability to bring inventory and XP back into the main world with you. However, it would require no major new scenario-building features, as far as I can see, in order to be useful. Yesterday, Sweetmarie gave me a demo of her Christmas scenario via the Ring terminal in Fairhaven, and it included find-an-object quests, scripted mobs, villages, etc, laid out on a pre-packaged terrain. Plenty enough to allow for some interesting user-created parts of a world.

yes, i have a similar idea. but basically, its a "ring" with one or more portals. the ring is for everyone but the portals may be different, or at least some of them.

I think the Ring should be just modified well duped since we want to keep the ring right? But I think it should be edited to make and work with actual regions not just these special ring mission zones. You still have to make the maps and such and add them but once their in the client/server you could edit bigger maps with the ring.

Say if you have a special flag on ur account like the :DEV: you could access this new advanced editor from the char screen and start working their.

I think everyone wants this but we have some good programmers but no one knows enough yet to be able to do this yet :(

Version 0.10.0
The main goal of this version is to develop a web based tool chain to create collaboratively a virtual world.

For the developers here with empty-world syndrome... In conversation with Marelli, a Ring scenario creator, I've learned of two sites that have small collections of Ring scenarios that can be downloaded: http://en.ryzomnomnom.com/wiki/List_of_Ring_scenarios/Downloads and the new http://wwww.3025-game.de/ryzom/en/ring/

i guess i need to learn more about ring scenarios. basically i think it allows people to add their own scenarios and somehow link them into the main server. but the rings are on separate servers, is that right? opensim has hypergrids that work the same. you can go from one world to the next. and so on.

if that is the way things works, it sounds great. or is it something else?
