sent an email and got the hint that the ryzom config should be set to OpenGL instead of auto.

did so but nothing changed.

PS - These are my specs:
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Build 2600) (5.1 2600)
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz / x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 / GenuineIntel / 3200MHz / 2 Processors found
NeL3D: OpenGL / NVIDIA Corporation / GeForce FX 5200/AGP/SSE2 / 1.5.1
3DCard: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 , version 6.1.7.7

Not what you call out of date I'd say
