Well, in the netherlands during the 17th and 18th century, the lengthening of a sounding letter (vowel?) could be done in several ways, spelling was not yet defined so people tended to do what they liked best. One way was to spell a letter double: /aa/ The other common way was to use the letter /e/ as a signaller that a sounding letter was lengthened. So /ae/, /ue/ and /oe/ in which the last one gained a different sound later on. Thus /aa/ and /ae/ were actually the same sound! This answer your question how I got to the change? |
