Confused

So i'm just getting started with this game, i've tried it a couple of times before, and found it really interesting, but also very confusing seeing as it is a very unique MMO. So other games caught my interest so i forgot all about ryzom.. but now i really wanna give it a shot

If i pick like..crappy abilities in the beginning, will it make give my character a bad foundation of skills, thus making it have less potential when i actually learn the game? If so, is there any good guides for character builds and such out there?

Re: Confused

Unlike other games, all of Ryzom's skills can be learned. So, making a bad choice in collecting a skill will, at most, slow down your progress a bit until you get enough skill points to sort it out. There's not really any way to gimp your character.

As for guides.. just take a look at the stanzas as you're about to purchase them and, if further questions arise, ask in uni chat .

Enjoy,
- Sui

Alright i'll just try picking what seems good. By the way, is magic a viable option to melee combat, in the beginning and endgame?

Edit: If i'm a magic-type of character, should i wear lighter armor sets? Is there cloth?

Re: Confused

Magic ability is dependent on fighting ability, to the extent that higher level spells require you to "spend" sap and hit points to make it fire faster (deleting time credits) and farther (deleting range credits). You can get away with some range reduction at first or extra time to fire spells, but as you advance, it will aggravate you at best, get you killed at the worst. Most players I know keep both abilities fairly close (within 30 levels or so).

As far as armor goes:
Light Armor: little to no malus, but flimsy protection. mainly used for magic casting or digging/crafting (boosted with focus points)
Medium Armor: moderate malus, depending on materials used to craft it. Most us it for ranged combat or dual wield fighting, some use it for magic casting
Heavy Armor: Huge malus on casting time and HP/sap drain, as well as range and effect of the spell. Primarily used for combat.

Hope this helped.

Unfortunately not... crafters can't control armor malus.
LA is always 0
MA is always 5 per piece
HA is always 20 per piece (NPC bandit armor being an exception)
