Has anyone from nevrax or jolt answered why we cant alter the zoom out?

Im just curious, because one of my pet hates is not being able to zoom out further, and since there is a change we can make that allows it, why does this cause a problem doing it?

I havent made the alteration (which i wont describe for obvious reasons), but i find it very frustrating knowing i could, but if i did i would loose all support from the CSR or jolt.

Anyone know why this is such a problem?

As noted in several posts, the zoom on the character is far less than other games, and much to claustrophobic.

Im not expecting a "yes you can now" , but a reason why it is so critical would be nice - does it increase crash chances or something along those lines?

Also, what level of "no support " are we talking about - if i get stuck somewhere the GMs wont move me? or just problems with the software? is it none as in completely none?

Is it bannable to make the change?

I must admit i find it odd that something that would increase my enjoyment of the game is being blocked and no reason given.

I think that's the reason. More zoom = more detail = more strain on system = more crashes

I would suggest going ahead and doing it. Worst case scenario, they will make you reinstall the game to get support on any technical issues. No, it's not something they ban over, you're permitted to do it, they just won't offer tech support because that is an unsupported play mode.

At least that is my impression on the situation.

Because your editing the config files, and that is against the EULA. I remember Dam was once ordered to change it before he was allowed support again.

Technically, that should never be the case. More system strain should only cause slowdown, not crashing - all the information to be processed is still there, it's just arriving slowly. If that causes a crash, there is a fault with the piece of software in question.

I've made the change (yep, no support if I need it), and my system handles it fine (not really a top-end system). As long as your detail levels are set correctly, the change should cause no crash problems. Max settings with high zoom on a less-than-capable machine will make Ryzom very sloooooow.

My advice is this. If the current zoom is a problem (which it certainly is for me), make the change, and test it. If you can played zoomed out for a few hours without any unexpected problems, go with it. But always remember - you will get no support, i.e. if you're stuck after teleporting or something similar, prepare to log out and re-install.

I was just guessing

But I agree, try it, and if it seems to run ok, keep it. There shouldn't be any penalties more serious than a game reinstall. And I'd say even if it did come to that, it's worth it.

there is one occasion that could prompt crashes, setting the zoom to negative values, so that you could accidently hit 0, which causes a freeze, probably due to division by zero

@sehracii - sorry about that, I meant to put a smiley after the first para and forgot Just re-read and it was a bit geeky and short, not intentional tho

@xeno - I don't think the camera position is used in a division mate, just multiplication matrices (for transform and rotate). The lowest values are negative (close to the floor), and highest are positive - I've been down 'under' the ground by accident (by some way too), and Ryzom handles it very admirably It also handles obstacles well - a good example is walking into Min-Cho, and the large golden arch there. Every time I walk through/under/past it, the camera works perfectly - either bobbing below or just under the arch. Nice solid camera code, /bow nevrax

Re: Has anyone from nevrax or jolt answered why we cant alter the zoom out?

My guess is that Nevrax wants to give strong signal not to mess with config files to make everyones (especially support staff life easier. Zoom distance may be quite innocent modification, but then players start wanting to do even more changes and may mess their configuration.

Another guess goes that the game has been tested mainly with default settings and support staff does not have experience on effects of modifying config files and thus unable to give good support in that case.

I propose that you ask this question at Q&A thread, maybe it will be picked up and answered in detail.

P.S. I personally find it silly that client side normal text based configuration files cannot be altered by players.

EDIT: Actually it was answered in one of the earlier Q&A rounds http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14114 . If you want more than that, I suppose you should rephrase your question to take account what has been already said.
