Re: State of the Game ? Newb Post

Pyr is very impressive.. in an old world, primitive way lots of narrow twisty alleys - but perfectly safe thanks to the constant patrols of stormtroopers

Zora worries me, their preoccupation with magnetic effects and electricity makes me think of living with a cellphone strapped to my head, underneath high voltage powerlines :P .. no wonder their skin has turned blue.

Yrkanis is beautiful, but blends in with the surrounding forest a little too well, concealing its true granduer.

Fairhaven is also quite pretty, but you really need to have a fishing rod to get the most out of it

Fair Haven - is like an Ice Berg 90% of it is under the water.

Trykers are the true Eco friendly Race - their buildings have minimum impact on the scenery and our power comes from renewable resources - the wind.

Never under-estimate the Trykers and never judge them by their looks!

Well, certainly the largest and most massive. And it's not without a certain charm, if you like dust and sun seared brick. For real beauty, however, you must see Yrankis in the spring!

Re: State of the Game – Newb Post

I am in the same boat, i. e. evaluating the game. What can I say? I want to like this game so much, but it makes it rather hard. Mebbe I am missing something, so pls enlighten me.
First the good:
1. Proly the best community out there, helpful and mature
2. Modular action system. Not very familiar with it yet, but it seems like it would add a lot of depth to the game.
3. Original world and Races
The Bad:
1. The grind. Yes I know every game has grind, but there seems nothing else to do in the game (see below)
2. Low player populateion. World seems deserted
The Ugly:
1. Content!!! Where is it? Quests are pretty much of one variety and are generally not worth the rewards.
2. Exploring or lack of there of. Since it seems to be impossible to utrun monsters, I can only go as far as I can kill everything. Even if it was posible, whats the point? Monsters only drop raw mats, so its not like I am going to find something interesting.
3. Just a general lack of things to do besides grinding especially if crafting is not your thing.

Please let me know if I am wrong on anything. I did not spend long enough in it to pretend to know everything. I'd love to play it, but as it is, it looks like something I would not mind playing occasionally on a free server--not something I would pay money for.

Re: State of the Game – Newb Post

i seem to have taken to being a bullet point replier in this thread. ho hum

1. The grind. Yes I know every game has grind, but there seems nothing else to do in the game (see below)
I've been playing since september and haven't found the need to grind anything until very recently (wars and outposts incoming so being able to hit people a bit is high on my to-do list now)

2. Low player populateion. World seems deserted
It's a niche game and thus has much lower pop's than the big guns, but there are plenty of people here. If your still on the starter island then indeed they are pretty empty, but that isn't the game it's a training area.

1. Content!!! Where is it? Quests are pretty much of one variety and are generally not worth the rewards.
It's all around you loads of posts on this so wont restate it here

2. Exploring or lack of there of. Since it seems to be impossible to utrun monsters, I can only go as far as I can kill everything. Even if it was posible, whats the point? Monsters only drop raw mats, so its not like I am going to find something interesting.
lol, exploring is one of the best bits. the world is an amazing place, the level of detail and attention to detail is stunning. Believe it or not its possible to explore everywhere at any level if u have enough patience and guile but it gets easier at higher levels. (and yes you can outrun mobs but you havent reached a high enough level to do it yet i guess)
the comment about mobs dropping nothing worthwhile, um why would a yubo be carrying around 50 dapper and medium vest? Everything bar a couple of boss armors is player made. The quality and usefulness of the crafted items is dependent on the raw materials put into it..

3. Just a general lack of things to do besides grinding especially if crafting is not your thing.
content again.. do a quick search on this forum for some old debates -)

It does sound to me as if you expecting a clone of EQ or WoW or whatever, the main attraction for Ryzom for a lot of us it's that is exactly what it isnt.

I'm not gonna try to tell you that Ryzom is a wonderful game. for me it is, and has held me captive for a very long time. The world is alive, not a few generic areas and instanced dungeons (there are none) my character lives in it and interacts with it. It takes a bit of adjustment maybe from other games. But i guess if u dont see the magic then dont stress, there will be a game that does it for u somewhere

Ryzom is a sandbox game, if you look for it, if you make it, there's plenty to do. It just requires a different approach to many other MMOs that some people can't adjust to.

>2. Low player populateion. World seems deserted

Where are you?
Zorai is pretty sparse but the rest are generally busy.
Bare in mind also that it's summer, and very hot. People often have 'better' things to do

>1. Content!!! Where is it? Quests are pretty much of one variety and are >generally not worth the rewards.

This question/protest is really beginning to irk me and apologies for you being the trigger for my ire...

What the hell do people mean by 'content'?

You have a living world, a great background, a fantastic and roleplay friendly community, you have intereliant crafters/foragers and hunters, you have an oncoming war storyline, you have lots of events - both player and guide created. You have stories, you have background...

So, what DO you mean by content? You mention quests? Does this mean you want the same cookie-cutter repeated, instanced questing as every other MMO? IMO it is a blessing we don't have those. When you get involved in an event in Ryzom it means something, its not just another notch on your levelling post. You can gain meaningful fame (amongst the playerbase) and, very rarely, a meaningful reward - one that commemorates a unique event, time and place in Ryzom's history.

The main reward of missions, not quests, is fame.
The main reward of encyclopaedia missions is extra power/s, extra stanzas or new craft patterns. At least so far. They actually make sense in context though, rites of passage rather than slaying the same ghost pirate that everyone else on the server has.

>2. Exploring or lack of there of. Since it seems to be impossible to utrun >monsters, I can only go as far as I can kill everything. Even if it was posible, >whats the point? Monsters only drop raw mats, so its not like I am going to >find something interesting.

Ryzom is very much an exploration game, so much to see and investigate (and get killed by). It is POSSIBLE to reach every land at level 1, purely by sneaking. Possible, not easy. It is also actually possible to outrun monsters now, but you'll need enough armour/hp or speed run power to do it.

Yes, monsters (almost all) only drop mats. That's another good thing about Ryzom IMO, no stupid drops (daggers from rats) and, in general, no uber loot items. This makes the world more plausible and consistent. The only uber loot we have (Boss Armour) has caused more problems and hassle than just about anything else in the game and I really wish they'd never put it in, reserving it for event prizes or something >:-(

>3. Just a general lack of things to do besides grinding especially if crafting is >not your thing.

Think bigger.
Roleplay, read the background, fit yourself into the world, socialise, keep up with and participate in events. There's PLENTY to do.

>Please let me know if I am wrong on anything. I did not spend long enough in >it to pretend to know everything. I'd love to play it, but as it is, it looks like >something I would not mind playing occasionally on a free server--not >something I would pay money for.

Sounds like you were/are too hasty. Expecting to do everything at low level and not getting into Ryzom's more social/RP mindest.

Its not a 'game' game, it's a world and community building game.

Re: State of the Game – Newb Post

Please understand, I did not post to flame. Rather I guess I wanted some reassurance that it is a worthwile game. Like I said, I think this game is very innovative and has a lot of potential. I agree that geting armor from an animal is silly, but getting the same from some humanoid NPC is exciting expecially if its a pay off for long exploration. But you are right I probably just have not given it enough of a try.
As far as what I mean by content, I am just rather frustrated that pretty much all I can do atm is kill low level critters near a city. No I am not a l33t kiddie who wants to cap his level in a week, I just wish there was more. I think the fact that I cant explore yet is bugging me the most
BTW I did recently try EQ2, apart from graphics, have not discovered anything that has not been done to death elsewhere

Re: State of the Game – Newb Post

Don't worry about Jyudas, he gets a bit rabid and frothy when someone mentions WoW or Quests(tm) However it's worth noting that his post is full of genuine comments about the game, rather than the profanity and insane babble that you'd get if you posted the same on the Wow forums...
