Re: I guess this is goodbye

Olepi, I'm really sorry that the problem you have been having for a while now hasn't been resolved. And I'm really sorry that the community has to lose someone that has always been positive and helpful. Though I have only known you a short while, I'm still sorry to see you go.

Re: I guess this is goodbye

Listing a bunch of other games to consider instead of Ryzom, that's spiteful.

I meant only to give constructive criticism to his words. I would like to see him stay. I hope he reconsiders and talks to the CSRs about his problem so that help can be given to solve his problem. I know the pain of crashes. The last patch has done a doosy on my machine, but I persist and I get help and I continue to play.

(my computer hates patches and I always end up with crash problems after big patches. I really do feel his pain.)

Re: I guess this is goodbye

I still don't see it that way maybe thats me and my love of english language, perhaps slightly angry which goes with frustration but spiteful would be worded differently but I really can't be bothered with an english lesson for people at 2am. Trust me I know spiteful like it was a long lost brother deep down inside me and I could tell if this was it :P

Personally I just think he was attempting to highlight his frustration by showing that it doesn't appear to be his system thats at fault if it can run a range of other popular 3d games.

Personally ryzom crashes a lot for me I just try not to let it get to me, it bleeds memory and rampages though my page file and I'd like to see olepi stay myself but I know there's basicly no way to fix this problem. It's not just the last patch ryzom has always been difficult to run.

Re: I guess this is goodbye

I assume you have heat spreaders on your RAM chips? Really taxing the system like this game does will cause that to happen. There are a few other ootions I would consider tweaking for the ATI chipset. If you are interested I can post them later.

Also if you are still really interested in playing this game I would highly recommend downloading Klients chat program. Very small and easy to set up. There is a guy in there who is very knowledgable about the backend settings of the game and can walk you through some tweaks, settings. He'll be one of the few that has an "@" in front of his name.

I have an ATI mobile chipset that was very crash happy before I did those tweaks. My nVidia mobile chipset on my other machine was pretty much ready after the install. Some games are optimized for nVidia and later tweaked for ATI compatibilty later (which I think is a fair assumption here with the nVidia logo on the load screeen).

There are other games like SWG that were created with ATI in mind and later ported for nVidia compatibility.

In both games one chipset performs night and day better over the one:

ATI 64 Mb chipset, 1 GB RAM, 2.1 GHz mobile chipset
(Runs Ryzom so so, SWG almost always 25 FPS)

nVidia 32 Mb (a good 1+ year older), 512 Mb RAM, 3.2 GHz Desktop processor
(Runs Ryzom almost always 25 FPS, SWG near 3-5 FPS when I had 1.5 Gb RAM).

Less taxing games seem to be comparable though.

Sorry if I sounded spiteful, I had to decide whether to just disappear, or let people know why I am leaving. I also wanted everyone to know that I have no ill will towards any player, and all my frustration is with my crashing; I think SoR is a great game with great people.

I'm gonna run memtest, and may even use this as an excuse to build a new rig In the meantime, I will be absent.

I did list the other games for two reasons:
1) the machine itself is stable, and has been running all kinds of things for over a year
2) it does not help SoR that all these other games will work, when SoR won't. I've been in the software business for 25 years, and it is not a good sign when all your competitor's products work, and yours doesn't, on the same hardware.

Re: I guess this is goodbye

I hope we see you return Olepi. And I hope that help can be given. As I mentioned, nothing taxes your machine like Ryzom does, not even Oblivion. You've got a good enough rig to run Ryzom, we jsut need to pin down what is causing the crashes.

Here's hoping you make a speedy return.

Now it's just an "absent until fault is rectified thread" .....
That is the benefit of a good night sleep Olepi

I have played City of Heroes, City of Villains, Eve, Dark Age of Camelot, and even a few weeks of WoW, and the machine never crashes. Never. I played DAOC for a year, and CoH for two years on this same hardware. The number of crashes of those games could be counted on one hand.

I can also play CiV4, Oblivion, Rome Total War, NeverWinter Nights, GTA, Heroes of Might and Magic 3,4, and 5, Fable, Freelancer, Ghost Master, Sid Meier's Pirates, Half-Life 2, Star Wars KoTR, and more, all with no trouble. I use this machine for work sometimes, using a VPN into work with a VNC session, no problems.

I upgraded the drivers for my graphics card, updated the firmware of my router, and verified the Ryzom image, all to no avail.

It has come down to several crashes every night. Any night that I don't crash is rare. I cannot be counted on in a group: twice I rebooted at the OP fight. The game is fun, and I want to play, but I cannot stand the frustration.

Consider:
DAOC -- ok
CoH -- ok
Eve -- ok
WoW -- ok
CiV4 -- ok
Heroes of Might and Magic 3,4,5 -- ok
Star Wars KoTR -- ok
Half-Life 2 -- ok
Ghost Master -- ok
Rome Total War -- ok
Sid Meier's Pirates -- ok
NeverWinter Nights -- ok
Freelancer -- ok
Fable -- ok
Grand Theft Auto (3 flavors) -- ok
Oblivion -- ok
Morrowind -- ok
Saga of Ryzom -- BAD

So it is with a heavy heart that I say I will miss the game, and the extra good community.

Olepi

edit:
AMD Athlon 3200
1 gb memory
ATI Radeon 9800
broadband connection
Windows XP

I play/ed most of what you have listed with a similar spec machine, except I have an Nvidia card and play Ryzom at full settings for hours on end.

Maybe get a loan of an Nvidia card if possible, mine is only a 6600 GTOC and runs the game superbly
