With a Free Trial, you will be able to try all the creation tools of the Ring with a basic set of creatures and maps, but you won't be able to play your own adventure with others nor participate in other player's adventures.

Tomorrow and the next days, other patches will follow. More info to come!
A few things about the Ring now, to answer some of your concerns:
- Dedicated forums have been opened, please post in the appropriate section for discussions related to the Ring.
- A special Ring support forum has been opened as well; reach the support team there for issues related to the Ring.
- No NDA for the Beta, you can now share your experience with others anywhere.
- Any scenario you create in the Beta on the ATS will be usable at the Ring release. So you can start creating a big adventure right now, it won't be wasted!
Have fun on the Ring Beta!

In order to access the ATS and the Ring, you have to:
- Create a copy of your fully patched Ryzom client folder;
- Download this file, extract it, and paste this new client.cfg into your new folder, overwriting the one that is already there;
- Launch the client_ryzom_rd.exe. You should have to patch between 600 MB to 1.5 GB.
- While patching, why not reading the Ring Manual Beta version?
All you have to do now is have fun with the Ring on the ATS! :D

We already gave access this week to 40 more active players and also to those who added their names to our list at the GC Leipzig. But today, with the opening of the Alpha to our 589 ATS (Advanced Test Server) testers, we're crossing another key point as it's the first time we'll welcome so many people on the Ring.
To those who wonder, an ATS tester is a player who filled out a form and got enrolled in order to gain access to the ATS (Advanced Test Server) a few months ago. This form is no longer available.
If you are not sure you are one of them or not, here's an easy trick: ATS players have access to one more forum dedicated to the ATS.
To the ATS testers: please read carefully the posts of your ATS leader on your ATS forum to patch your ATS client properly. We also highly encourage you to read the Ring manual to get started.
And then, play and most importantly have fun with the Ring! :D

And, at the end, we think you're right. Linking the Ring packs to the character level would create more problems than it would solve (a lot of old-time players are not level 250, new players would have to go a long way before being able to use the Ring to its full extent, etc.).
On the other side, as pointed out in the comments, giving an advantage to old-time players would be a good thing, and there is a need to have new players discovering a bit of the mainland before being able to properly use the maps and mobs in the Ring.
So, we are replacing the Ring points system by a system based on the exploration of the game. In our current and updated design document, Ring packs are now unlocked by accumulating respawn points with your character. The more you discover of Atys, the more content will be available to you during Ring editing sessions. This way, we hope to see new players participating in world treks and discovering enough of the game to allow them to use the content properly, while those of you who have been there long enough will have most, if not all, the content of the Ring available from the start.
Many thanks to the many contributors who wrote insightful comments on this subject.

With the Beta approaching, we've made available the subscription form to let you apply to join our final Alpha test phase.
However, you need to know that this form is not for Ring editors recruitment; at least not directly. If you get accepted here, you will get the possibility to play in Ring scenarios created by Ring editors. You would get one step closer though, since we will recruit new Ring editors among the ones who play Ring scenarios frequently and fit the role.
And be sure to read the whole (lengthy) text before filling the form. :)

The Ryzom Ring website gets a lifting - a new look, but also new presentation articles, screenshots and links to press articles.
In the coming months, we'll add more content and features to this site - it will be a complementary tool for the Ring Dungeon Masters. As a side note, the Alpha Testers already use it to exchange tips, HOWTOs, scenario saves, etc.
If you want to know a bit more about what it can already do, you can also have a look at plone.org, since it is built upon a Python/Zope/Plone technology.

Some news from the Ring Alpha...
The first tests are going fine and, thanks to the first few who helped us, we were able to smoothly put in place the first tools to be used through whole the Alpha Test. We now have a bugtracker being filled, a new website which begins to be very useful and a first set of working Ring scenarios - while the test sessions, the mailing-list and the forum are lively animated by the core team.
So, that's the right time to welcome a second wave of Alpha Testers. The team will remain small, but we'll welcome new volunteers to start growing up the team in numbers. The current Ring Alpha testers will be responsible for sponsoring the new applicants, so if you wish to participate, you can try asking around you in game. :)
See you on the Ring!

The Ryzom Ring, the upcoming expansion which will allow you to create your own events and scenarios within the game, is now approaching the alpha stage.
Soon, a first version will be released for the first pass of tests and debug; this version won't be feature complete, the goal being to fix bugs and start getting your feedback. We have selected about 50 of you for the phase 1 of the alpha test, based on displayed interest and skills - if you have been selected, you will receive an email in the next 7 days (be sure to check that the address recorded in the billing system)..
Since the first team needs to be small and focused, we couldn't include everyone we wished - but don't worry, we will progressively ramp up the number of alpha testers as we move forward, and an application form will be available.
Also, during the alpha test (and later during the beta test), I will dedicate a good deal of my time to the Ring alpha testers, ensuring communication between them and the Ring dev team. As a result, Marjo - whom you have probably noticed since she's writing the Forum Watch news - will temporarily take over some of my current duties, such as writing the news and articles on ryzom.com. She'll also join the boards and start posting there. You should start to see her around as soon as today. :)
Note: as usual during a game alpha or beta-test, testers will be bound to a non-disclosure agreement (to prevent concepts from being leaked and to avoid giving a wrong impression of the game to the general public), so please don't harass them with questions - they won't be able to answer you. Don't worry though, I'll stay around to make sure you get updates when we reach important milestones.

At 3pm on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th, we will present the first demo of R² at 'Le Monde du Jeu'. Since we are still in the early stages of development, it won't be a complete overview of the Ring, but rather a first glimpse at the tools. And, no, sorry, you won't be able to play with it... *grin*
Anyway, it should be fun. :)

We are proud to present the first Ryzom Ring trailer! This movie, featuring actual gameplay and scenes from the upcoming expansion, has been posted on Warcry, Mondes Persistants and 4players.
The Ryzom Ring will allow you create your own scenarios inside the Ryzom universe. Here, you will get a glimpse of the creation of a bandit village, the setup of pathways and an attack of Gibbaïs...

As a full featured expansion pack to Ryzom, the Ring already had a dedicated website, several dedicated articles from the dev team, it now also has a dedicated logo:
The Ring website has been updated to reflect the change.

Starting this week, we're partnering with MMORPG.com to spread the word about the Ring extension, by publishing the periodical articles from the R2 team as special features on their website.
You can thus find the English version of the fourth article, 'Bandits!' as a Scenario Example on MMORPG.com. The French and German versions can be found, as usual, on the Ryzom Ring website.
In this article, Daniel Miller, Nevrax' CTO and Producer for The Ring, gives additional details on the features and inner workings of R2 scenarios. You'll follow the work of Frank, a fictional pioneer creating a scenario made of several acts. The participants will have to guide Sam, a coward NPC, through several trials setup by his clan to prove himself worthy...

David Blanchard, Assistant Producer for the Ryzom Ring, delves into the Ryzom Ring set of services that will help you to create, manage and share scenarios. He follows the steps of Matthew, a fictional Ryzom Ring pioneer, who experiments it.
The article can be found on the Ryzom Ring website.

Freshly cooked by Daniel Miller, the second Ryzom Ring article is now
out! It gives the first description of the tools you'll be able to use
to edit and animate your own lands - and even features some screenshots.
Good reading! [Discuss it!]

Daniel Miller, Nevrax's Technical Director and the Producer of the
Ryzom Ring (aka R2), wrote an introductory article on the
upcoming extension. It gathers the information we have released
in various places since the R2 announcement at E3, to give everyone a
the same knowledge before starting to address more specific aspects of
the project in the next articles.
You will find the article on the Ryzom Ring website, refactored
today to give space to the R2 team's articles.
